January 20th Weekly Market Update & Rankings
This is David Cohne, Head Strategist for No BS Investor, with your weekly market update and ETF & Stock Rankings.
Through January 20h, the S&P 500 is up 4.6% for the year, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 4.1%, the Nasdaq is up 7.0% and the EAFE index, which tracks the international markets is up 4.21% for the year. Our No BS ETF Trader model is up 4.4%.
The January rally has continued this week with many of the indices ending the day up slightly; but the day was mixed. The focus of the day was on earnings and company reports, but economic health continues to be on many investors’ minds. IBM was up 4.4% for the day as it offered a strong outlook on its business prospects. Intel Corp rose 2.9% after naming a new Chief Operating Officer. Microsoft rose 5.6% from strong earnings results. Google on the other hand, dropped 8.4% after it missed its quarterly profit and revenue expectations. General Electric finished flat after it reported fourth quarter earnings above estimates but revenues below.
In economic news, investors continue to follow the Greek saga. There appears to be a bond-swap deal in place betweenGreeceand its private bond holders. In addition, existing home sales rose 5 percent last month as reported by the National Association of Realtors. This is the third straight monthly increase and a 11 month high.
In other corporate news, Schlumberger Ltd was up 1.3% for the day after it reported a 36% gain in its earnings due to strong offshore and land operations. Talbots Inc was up 18.6% due to rumors of a takeover byGolden Gateor TPG.
